SCHOOL HOLIDAYS JUST AROUND THE CORNER:

The school term is at an end once again, that means that holiday tennis camps are on offer.

Week one is from the 7-11th of July, and week two is from the 14-18th of July 2008.  The camps have 2 sessions, 9-12am and 1-4pm.

The morning sessions from 9-12 am is for the beginner and intermediate players, and 1-4 is for the advanced squad type players.  The beginner camps work on the basics of lots of rallying games, movement, hitting, and fun!  The afternoon camps work on the more advanced tactics and match play exercises to get players ready for competitive play in up coming tournaments.

SEEDS TUMBLE AT WIMBLEDON:

It has been a big first week at The Championships.  There are always a few upsets in the first week at Wimbledon, but few would have picked Maria Sharapova to lose, or Marat Safin to give Novak Djokovic a tennis lesson.  NZ's own Marina Erakovic won the first two rounds before losing in a tight 3 set match in the third round, the first Kiwi woman to make the third round of Wimbledon for 20 years!

On the mens side, with Novak knocked out, Roger and Raphael look even more unbeatable, and it is a largly safe bet to say they will meet in the final for the fourth year in a row.  I personally think Roger will win his 6th consecutive title, break Bjorn Borgs record, and cement himself as the greatest player at Wimbledon in the open era.  In the womens draw it is a bit harder to pick actually, Jelana Jankovic has her best opportunity so far, with Sharapova and Ivanovic knocked out she is a real contender, however both of the Williams sisters are still in the draw and so they must be the favourites I think.

STARTER TENNIS:

A course for players between the ages of 5 and 11. The course is based on fun and skill work. No real technique but an emphasis on sending and receiving skills, and understanding control. Costs: $12, Duration: 4, 1/2 hour sessions.

ATOMIC BOMBS:

Follow on from starter tennis! Here the players are still learning racket head control and the understanding of the ball and their movements. Still learning through game based drills and fun. They are also becoming more thoughtful on placement of shots and trying to rally. Trying all exercises and shots is the key here not the outcome, over and in! Cost: $20.00, Duration: 4 1/2 hour sessions.

MINI ATOMS:

The first stage of Technical coaching. Here the children are aiming to rally. There is a test at the end of the course to see if the players are able to be moved into the next progression. An emphasis on all round skills also, with agility, understanding of flight paths and spins of the ball. Cost $ 30, Duration: 6, 1/2 hour sessions

POCKET ROCKETS:

Here the players are starting to show more understanding of movement on court and less inclined to be helped into grips and stances. The orange player starts to develop more consistency in their ability to move the ball around and in their preparation. Developing an over arm serve and some simple tactics the player become confident to rally freely. Cost: $ 60, Duration: 6, 1 hour sessions.

ATOMIC POWER:

Players within this colour are showing attributes and characteristics on court that will provide them to play in competition. This being, full court, full games with tie breaks and court etiquette. Green players must be showing signs of an all round game, with an understanding of strengths and weaknesses within their own game and the opponent's. Match tactics become more important to the individual and their style of play. The coach and player work together on this and encourage lots of rally and game based drills within the course. Cost: $60, Duration: 6, 1 hour sessions.

TRAIN YOUR GAME:

Consistency and placement are the two biggest keys to tennis.  Being able to control the ball over the net and into a part of the court is what the game is all about.

Try this drilling exercise to become more consistent and under control with your game:

Send your partner down the other end of the court (save yourself some energy - you will need it!), tell them that they can hit the ball to anywhere they want inside the singles court, and that you are going to hit the ball back to them.  Ask them to hit the ball at a speed that allows you to get to the ball, but that still makes you run and move.  The idea is to have one player working really hard to move and control the ball, while the other player learns to hit into space and control the direction of the rally.  Start the ball with a forehand or a backhand and play out the rally at a reasonable speed.  As the rally's become longer then increase the speed of the ball. To make it more difficult make yourself hit only into the back half of the court, or into the square behind the service box on the forehand side of the court.  You can add in some tennis scoring points and play a set if you want to make it more competitive, and of course you can chage roles so you are not always doing all of the running!

Work on different specific shots by changing the target you hit to on the court, eg: Work on your backhand crosscourt and your forehand down the line by hitting into the backhand corner of the court.
